5 Habits of Successful Students that You Can Start Today

August 23, 2017

Becoming a stellar pupil is no easy feat. However, there are a few ways to give yourself or your child a head start to this journey.

1. Stay Organized!

Has your child ever lost their homework? Or began the school year with 12 pencils only to need 12 more in a number of weeks? These are obvious signs of disorganization! Becoming organized can be as simple as purchasing a pencil pouch and a binder with dividers. Weekly or even daily binder checks can also keep students on track by keeping their work straight. Our tutors here at Momentum often use this trick to keep kids on track. Turning in missing assignments can immediately provide a grade boost, if accepted by the teacher.

2. Keep In Contact!

When students begin to wander away from their academic path to excellence, an essential idea is to make contact with the teacher. Many schools provide live, up-to-date online portals to check in on grades long before they are printed onto report cards. Additionally, creating a line of communication between student, parent, teacher, and even tutor, can make a highway for instant feedback on in-class and in-session performance.

3. Planner Perfection!

As a college student, I LOVE my planner. I couldn't live without it. It contains my class schedule, homework, test dates, and due dates. There are millions of options for planners including notebook sized ones, pocket sized planners, and even customize-able ones. Students may even be provided a planner in their student handbook. Using this tool can greatly increase organization and decrease stress.

4. Make a Morning Routine!

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it may not be the most important part of your morning. Energetic kids might benefit from some early morning exercise, a brisk walk, or even yoga. Sluggish night owls can seek peace from a light read or puzzle in the morning time. Gathering your focus in the morning sets the tone for the entire day. That's right - a hectic morning means an even more chaotic day. Some families might even enjoy setting an individual goal of the day at the breakfast table or in the car on the way to school!

5. Maintain Momentum!

There are many ways to supplement the brain exercise you or your student gets at school each day. Add some fun learning to weekends and vacations. Attend Momentum Summer Camp to keep up the hard work and make back to school easy! Full day and half day programs are available at the center in Santee. Check back here for information on pricing and themes in the coming months. But summer isn't the only break from learning that students get. They can still read books, do puzzles, play word games, and review in-class material at home on the weekends. It's a perfect way to customize curriculum to fit you and your child's interests.
